STANDS AVAILABLE at Tanglethorn for a lifestyle for nature enthusiasts and horse-lovers.

The fulfillment of a dream to create a low-density, conservation-friendly wildlife estate for discerning home owners, nature lovers and horse riding enthusiasts, Tanglethorn Estate offers safe, tranquil, country living within easy reach of urban amenities.

Given that remaining stands are 4000 square meters or larger, our pricing structure offers excellent value for money when compared to stands half the size in urban areas. If the outdoor lifestyle appeals to you and you don’t want the risk and hassle of owning a smallholding, it just makes sense!

The Vision

Tanglethorn Estate was conceptualised with an ideal in mind – to recapture the gracious African farm lifestyle that pioneer South Africans enjoyed at the turn of the 20th century. The vision is to enhance quality of life on a wildlife estate, where families can reside in a secure farm environment, enjoy the benefits of a country life while still staying within easy reach of the vibrant urban centres of Hillcrest and Pietermaritzburg. Key to this vision was securing the right of residents to go on outrides and long hikes in a natural environment in perpetuity, knowing that no future urban developments will compromise these activities. The vision, therefore, provides for the establishment of a low-density housing estate where space, privacy and guaranteed access to large portions of unspoilt land would allow for a quality lifestyle. At Tanglethorn farm, embraced by the thornveld between Camperdown and Pietermaritzburg, a precious remnant of African bush was discovered where this vision could be realised.

The Location

Tanglethorn Estate comprises 78 hectares of rolling thornveld with unparalleled views of Table Mountain approximately halfway between Pietermaritzburg and Hillcrest. At an altitude of 800m, the climate is temperate and offers respite from the coastal humidity and the inland heat. Winters are mild, offering the odd opportunity to curl up beside a log fire.

Facilities

All of the infrastructural services necessary for the transfer of the stands have been provided, including metered water and electrical connections.

A perimeter game fence, electrified fencing near the homes and a remote-operated security gate will give you and your family peace of mind and enhance your personal safety. Underground ducting to each home will facilitate the installation of the Home Owners Association choice of communication medium. Wireless telephone and internet services are available on the estate directly from Telkom or a private service provider.

Impala, zebra and kudu have been reintroduced to supplement the naturally occurring bushbuck, reedbuck and duiker. Criss-crossing the estate, varied bridled paths will afford equestrians and hikers the opportunity to enjoy exhilarating outrides, walks and energetic mountain bike excursions. Rustic benches, a bird hide and a picnic site will enhance the enjoyment of your outdoor activities. Catering to bird lovers, a small wetland area will be established to attract a plethora of bird life.

Equestrian

Tanglethorn Estate uniquely caters to the needs of equestrians and horse lovers, offering outstanding outrides in an unspoilt natural environment. The right of access to the entire 78-hectare estate will be entrenched in perpetuity in the rights of the estate home owners. To facilitate your passion for horse riding, the estate provides stabling, management services, paddocks, arena and lunge ring.

The Stands

Enjoy large, spaciously situated properties with unsurpassed views. The homes and associated facilities will be strung along the ridge of the farm. All horse stables, paddocks and the main access roads will be located behind the homes to ensure uninterrupted, breath-taking views.

Theme for Building

Drawing inspiration from the early colonial farmhouses of Natal, the Planning and Design Code is aimed at enhancing your country lifestyle through its architecture and ensuring that each home is built to blend in with the Tanglethorn style. This still allows the owner room to maintain the individuality of their home while creating a harmonious, visually pleasing environment.

FGG Architects, a renowned firm with offices in both Durban and Pietermaritzburg, has been entrusted with the development of the architectural theme, as well as the design and project management of the building of Tanglethorn Estate homes. All final designs and plans of the total development on each residential stand must be submitted to the Home Owners Association for approval.

The essence of the Tanglethorn design:
• A development footprint limited to 1000m2 on a specified location within the stand.
• Wide verandas on at least one side of the house
• Classic, proportionate principles
• Green corrugated sheet roofing
• Large windows, including sash and false sash styling
• Touches of sandstone cladding
• Height restrictions resulting in split levels homes, where the slope allows.

All building stands will be cleared of alien vegetation by the developers. Wherever possible, mature indigenous trees and vegetation will be retained and incorporated into the general plan for the stand.
