BENGUELA COVE LAGOON, WINE ESTATE:

Lagoon Lifestyle: Benguela Cove is situated on five kilometers of a fascinating estuarine system where the Bot River runs into a lagoon sandwiched between the mountain and the ocean, with only a sandbar to be occasionally breached.

Inhabiting this glorious expanse of water are numerous birds and fish. Benguela Cove has a privileged location on the deep side of the lagoon where two deep water jetties and a slipway allow for exceptional water-sport activity.

Activities on the Estate: From skiing to sailing, jetskiing, canoeing and angling as well as nature cruises, the placid waters of the Bot River estuary and lagoon (South Africa's second largest) provide the ultimate in watersport leisure in a spellbinding natural environment. Sports fisherman will not be disappointed either, with catches of steenbras and galjoen during the winter months and kob, shad, steenbras and garrick in the summer, while shore anglers will delight in the kob, brought close in-shore on the back of the hot summer winds.

Life at Benguela Cove follows the ebb and flow of the tide. The endless calm bestowed on those special places where the earth and the water are seamless.

At Benguela Cove, a large tract of Africa has been retained and restocked to provide a pervasive and ever-lasting sense of wonder. For Benguela Cove lies on a globally important biodiversity hot spot.

Of the world's six floral kingdoms, the Cape's fynbos kingdom is the smallest but most diverse as within its natural boundaries are contained an enormous variety of trees, shrubs and flowers, many of which are to be found at Benguela Cove.

Stocked with animals which give the African veld such a sense of enchantment, a walk through the nature reserve will reveal dainty antelope species such as Grysbok and Duiker, small snake-catching mongoose and shy wild cats such as Genets and Caracal as well as a variety of endangered Tortoises. As the sun sets to the east, you will tune into the shrieks of the Fish Eagles as they hunt the waters across the lagoon.

As can be expected of its estuarine environment, a rich variety of birdlife inhabit the shored and hills of Benguela Cove, including Cape Francolin, Sand Plovers, Egyptian Goose, white breasted cormorant, Blue Cranes, Guinea Fowl, Kelp Gulls, Cape Cormorant, Cape Sugarbirds and rock pigeons as well as Malachite sunbirds, darting amongst the proteas, ericas and the brush of the cape fynbos habitat.

From June to September, the haunting, yet joyful sound of the world's only Whale Crier reverberates through the town of Hermanus. For this is the time when the Southern Right Whales are spotted entering the bay to seek peace and protection as they calve their young.

Once a whale catching station, the town (20 km from Benguela Cove) is today considered by the World Wildlife Foundation to be one of the top 10 best possible places in the world to watch whales, with the nature of the coastline such that from rocky cliffs one can view the giants a mere 10m in the ocean below. Peak whale season - when you are assured of daily sightings - is from August - October when the Whale Crier announces exactly where the leviathans are being sighted at the time.

Hermanus is the primary town amongst other hamlets and coastal villages situated on a heavenly and fascinating stretch of African coastline, where (apart from the pristine beaches and unspoiled lagoons), close to Benguela Cove is a glorious national botanical garden as well as walks in the majestic Kogelberg Biosphere reserve. The area is also the home to the two of the countrys top golf courses - Arabella and Hermanus Golf Clubs - while further afield, one can drive to sea caves and grottos and, then, all the way down the coast to Cape Aghulas, the legendary Cape of Needles where Africa dips into southernmost toe into the deep blue ocean.

Experience Hermanus

Between the rocky coastline and the green mountains lies "the village", as it is referred to by the locals. The residents of Hermanus have tried to keep the fisherman's village style of this town in tact, over the years. This neighbourhood is famous for Southern Right Whale watching during winter and spring, and is a popular retirement town. With a relaxed lifestyle, Hermanus is a fisherman's paradise and perfect for those who appreciate a slower pace of life, surrounded by majestic natural wonders.
