Bedroom bliss

Private Property South Africa
Lea Jacobs

We all have certain things we focus on when buying a home. Some make buying decisions based on the kitchen, others want a beautiful bathroom. But for many of us, it’s the master suite that clinches the deal.

Why, you ask? After all, surely all you do with a bedroom is sleep in it? Well, not exactly. Most of us regard our bedrooms as our retreat from the world, and the days when this important room merely contained a bed, a couple of side tables and a dressing table are over. Soft furnishings have become a major industry and these days most master bedrooms reflect a tranquil atmosphere, ideal for those who wish to be cocooned in their own little sanctuary.

Get with the show

Tonight’s episode of Private Property’s Win A Home (SABC3 at 8) will be taking a closer look at bedrooms and showcasing the boudoirs in some of South Africa's most beautiful homes. We've drawn back the curtains and taken a peek into what makes a bedroom spectacular.

Nestled in the heart of Zimbali and offering gorgeous views of the Zimbali coastal forest and fairways is an absolute stunner of a home. Priced at R32-million, this property has four exquisite en-suite bedrooms guaranteed to blow your mind. The palatial main bedroom features enormous windows that showcase the stunning views and the high-end interior quietly seduces you into resting your head.

Another example of bedroom bliss is a six-bedroom, six-bathroom home in Leisure Isle, Knysna, has a neo-colonial look and, given its address, would feature on most people’s lust-have lists. Large, cool, open spaces are the order of the day in this home and the enormous master bedroom enjoys fantastic views of the lagoon and Kynsna Heads. Priced at R30-million this stately home is a design masterpiece.

Ocean view

For those who relish the idea of lying in bed and listening to the Atlantic Ocean pound the rocks in Camps Bay, Private Property has an architectural masterpiece, priced at R45-million, just for you. The 80-square-metre master bedroom “penthouse suite” features its own private deck, complete with a spa bath and seamless, fold-away doors that seemingly bring the ocean right into the room. While the master suite may prove to be the room that clinches the sale, the entire home is outstanding and is literally fit for a king or queen.

Situated on the side of Table Mountain in one of Cape Town's most prestigious streets this family home is a must see. Priced at R12.5-million the enormous main bedroom covers the entire second floor, and offers panoramic views of Cape Town and distant views of the Atlantic Ocean. There's no doubt about it, this gorgeous room is the perfect place to kick back and relax after a hard day's work.

Size of course isn’t everything and while these homes all offer palatial master bedrooms, remember that a lot can be done with a smaller space. Check out this Pinterest page for more ideas!

Getting the right look is easier than you think and given the wide range of inexpensive designs available won’t necessarily bankrupt you.

One word of advice – buy good quality bed linen. Egyptian cotton makes a wonderful bed partner and is a must in every bedroom. There is a reason that Cleopatra looked so good and it isn’t only due to the fact that she reportedly bathed only in milk!
