The History of Germiston 1886-1999
Gold gave Germiston it's beginning in 1886. It became a municipality in 1903 and a city in 1950.
Pioneering honors go to August Simmer and John Jack, who came in 1886 to exploit the gold.
John Jack called the place Germiston after his childhood home near Glasgow. John Jack and August Simmer from Vacha in Germany found gold while prospecting on the farm of Elandsfontein. Both men made fortunes and the town sprung up next to the mine.
The world's largest gold refinery known as the Rand Refinery was established here in 1921.
Germiston is situated in the East Rand area of the Gauteng Province in South Africa. It is South Africa's sixth largest city with 70% of the western world's gold passing through its gold refinery. It has South Africa's biggest railway junction and the busiest civil airport - Rand Airport.

Many other mining ventures followed and Germistons growth was generated by supplementary
industrial requirements. These in turn attracted supporting commerce and increasing population.
Because of Germistons unique geographic position, situated at the center of the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging axis, Germiston became the focus of the countrys most extensive railway network. Today some 200 000 rail passengers and 170 000 metric tons of goods pass through the Citys station each month.
Germiston has the most important markets on its doorsteps, raw materials are readily obtained and
coal and steel are factors of immense economic importance. The City is also
the home of more than 700 factories, some of them the biggest in the country. Even though Germiston is predominantly an industrial area it is minutes away from large shopping malls and boasts a few superb entertainment facilities. Germiston is home to some fine restaurants and excellent accommodation establishments, where tourists or businessmen alike can find B&B, Self Catering, Guest Houses, Hotels or Lodges ranging in price from affordable to exclusive - something to suit all tastes. Being rich in history, Germiston combines historical experiences and recreation as well as sporting activities and facilities.
