While driving along the Witwatersrand mountain range on the outskirts of Johannesburg, Gauteng in South Africa, you will suddenly encounter a “real” FLYING SAUCER. This unique structure is situated at a lookout point on the Witwatersrand mountain range, running through the Roodepoort suburb of Kloofendal in the Gauteng province of the RSA.
This structure, which is a private residence, is characterized by long elliptic lines formed by an uninterrupted window line that slants outwards at an angle of 60º. The very distinct aerodynamic shape with its elliptic centre dome is a stark contrast with the immediate environment. However, through a 320º view in all four wind directions over the mountain range, it establishes a balance between the fauna and flora and the development of the modern man.
Approaching the “flying saucer” the enormity of its 650sqm cantilevered floor overshadows you, as you are overcome by the majestic power of ingenuity of the creator as his vision and skill turned into reality. The project commenced in 1991 and was completed in 1992. The house is based on eight columns with a ring-beam on top, keeping it in place. There are three garages, servants’ quarters with a bathroom and kitchen. The garage has its own workshop-area with toilet and hand-basin, and there is an outside toilet with a hand-basin for the gardener. The upper floor supported from the ring-beam with sixteen beams across the 550sqm floor. The diameter of the floor slab is 28m. A 100sqm tropical atrium lends privacy to the bedrooms. There are three en suite double bedrooms, each fitted with its own private bathroom. The study is also fitted with its own private bathroom and can easily be converted into a guest unit. The tropical atrium receives its natural sunlight through a 100sqm skylight dome, which also provides light into the entire open-space designed environment. The skylight is the largest dome erected over an indoor garden in a private residence. The billiard room and the Jacuzzi area are fitted with a ladies bar overlooking the north facing greenbelt environment towards OT Airport in the distance. All rooms have beautiful views especially at night when looking at the sky, moon and stars not to mention the city lights!
The bedrooms are fitted with large glass sliding doors and glass panels overlooking the atrium. Very romantic is the main bedroom facing east, allowing the sunrise to enter the room as a new day begins. The dining room, facing west, has a view of the sunset of a day, while dining at the dining-room table.
The kitchen area is fitted with modern cupboards, pantry and scullery.
When you approach the main 4m entrance through a large mirror door, you suddenly realise that you are about to enter one of the most modern masterpieces and luxurious residences of the century. Passing through the entrance, a large waterfall welcomes you, setting the atmosphere of tranquility and harmony.
At night a person can appreciate the moon and stars through the skylight, while watching TV in the family room. The property is very flexible in design and is ideal for Diplomats or CEO’s to have their meeting during office hours, and afterwards entertain people in the barbeque area with the men playing pool while the women sit and chat in the Jacuzzi. Secured parking for eighteen cars is available, eight of which is covered parking. The property is situated within 25km of three international airports and within 3km of a large shopping centre.
CHARACTERISTICTS OF THE PROPERTY
In developing the project, the emphasis was to ensure and preserve the fauna, flora and the greenbelt environment. The main dish with its beam took 6 months to construct, after which 50 tons of reinforcing steel was placed and covered with 400m³ of concrete. Of the 76 windows, 40 are fitted with ventilators at the top to ensure that there is sufficient air flow. There are no windows that can open, due to the 60º angle and for security reasons.
As engineer, I always had a feeling for creative structures and wanted to challenge impossible goals. As this vision is a very unique piece of skilled engineering and architectural work, it can only be appreciated with an open prospective future in mind. The house is not for the ordinary citizen, but it is designed for a fast-moving businessman or high-ranking official or dignitary. This property is in the market and seeks a unique buyer!
