Die Groot Karoo - Steytlerville
The town of Steytlerville is situated in the Groot karoo, between Willomore and Kirkwood on the R329. An hour and a half’s drive from Port Elizabeth, the town is approximately 120 years old, and has managed to retain it’s original charm. It is one of the gateways to the Addo Elephant Park, and the Baviaanskloof mountains. The town still has the wide main road for the donkey and cart to turn around, with stoeps to view the passers by. It is also the centre of the mohair and wool industry.
The climate consists of cool winters, hot summers anda low rainfall. It is the area famous for the Cape Folded Mountains, and set between the Baviaans Mountains and the Groot Rivier. It is an extremely healthy locality with benefits of being practically germ free, and beautiful clean, fresh water flowing straight from the Baviaans mountains. The air is unpolluted, and the area offers absolute peace and tranquillity.
The town has 2 Hotels, numerous B&B’s, a delicatessen, a bottle store, a café’, and numerous churches (20!) including the largest NG Kerk in S.A.
Activities available locally are off-roading, 4x4 and bike cycling, hiking, birding and, of course, camping.The Baviaanskloof Wilderness area is a World Heritage Site, it is the only place in Africa with 7 of the 8 botanical biomes i.e. types of vegetation, eg; tropical-desert.
The Addo Elephant Park is a short drive away, and the Cape folded mountains offer game lodges (with hunting, if required), clear skies for stargazing and plenty of opportunity for rest, relaxation or just sleeping!
Still Waters is just of the main road R329 as it crosses over the Groot Rivier with Still Waters just above the road and Steytlerville below. Still Waters’ map reference is between S24.345 & S33.321.
"The Abbey" (as it is known locally) is situated just outside the town on 1 acre of Karoo land with river frontage and would be perfect for developing or just to renovate the building.
