Wall designs to freshen up your space

If you’re stumped on how to add a bit of character and edge to your walls, look no further.

There is nothing worse than a dull wall. Mike Greeff, CEO of Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate says that ‘’walls showcase the personality of the home and its owners – after all, it is what encompasses the room’’ so why not make it aesthetically pleasing.

Having a feature wall is very en-vogue in the interior design industry at the moment and yes, it might be a bold move for some, but it is definitely worth it.

If you’re stumped on how to add a bit of character and edge to your walls, look no further! Below are a few tips and tricks you can use to turn your walls from drab to fab. Bonus, it does not have to cost an arm and a leg and it’s a fun DIY weekend project.

It doesn’t matter what your style is, the tricks below can amp up your walls and bring out your personality and taste. Whether you’re an art collector, a nature enthusiast, or a book lover, your walls can be customised so that you are always surrounded by the things you adore.

1. Go for large-scale art

An oversised painting or photograph will command attention and set the tone in a small space. Try a black-and-white photo in a minimalist space like your bedroom or add colour with a vibrant abstract piece. Greeff suggests that if you’re more on the sentimental side, have your favourite family photo printed onto a canvas. This will not only create a warm and fuzzy feeling every time you see it, but it will also be an excellent conversation-starter when entertaining.

Wall art ideas:

  • Aim for three: Grouping artwork is a surefire way to make a big impact in a room. Try using three pieces that draw on a similar theme i.e. three black and white images of iconic women or three different flowers.

  • A black and white photograph/canvas: Sometimes less is more. A black and white photograph serves as a perfect focal point.

  • Hang it low: Hanging art low can make it even more impactful, especially in an area that sees many people go through it like an entry or lounge.

  • Use a picture ledge: A picture ledge is a simple—and inexpensive way—to display your art collection. Whether you choose a single ledge or decide to group them, they're the perfect solution to fill a blank space.

2. Incorporate an accent wall

While you’re adding some personality to your walks, think about decorating the walls themselves. Choose a bright and bold paint colour for one of the walls or bring in a pattern using wallpaper. These decorative accent walls have an even bigger impact in smaller areas of the home. And while you’re at it, think about transforming your ceiling too.

3. Showcase fabric

A tapestry can add colour and pattern, as well as a sense of softness to a space. Consider framing vintage scarves, pre-loved baby blankets (for those who are sentimental) or other pretty textiles and hanging them on the wall. Bonus: These are a lot easier to move than framed paintings when it comes time to head to your next home.

Ideas for wall tapestry:

  • Bohemian weaving
  • Fabric painting
  • Handprints of your kids
  • Embroidery
  • Macrame art
  • Linen scroll wall hangings
  • Woven wheel wall art

4. Install shelves

If you’ve run out of floor space for bookshelves, take your collection to the wall. Install floating shelves and display hardcovers, small sculptures, and other odds and ends. This is a great if you need the extra storage space – it’s the ideal way to store all your bits and bobs without it looking like a mess.

5. Hang plates

You know that cabinet where your grandma stores all of her fine china? Have you ever wondered how often those actually get used? Instead of having your finest plates collect dust, why not display them for all to see and admire? Use wire plate hangers to display your favourite dishes and serving platters – tip: these make for great talking points too!

6. Bring in the plants

Who said plants were only meant for the windowsill? Try hanging or wall-mounted planters to add a bit of nature to your space and life to your walls. Ideas on how to add plants to your wall:

  • Build an indoor trellis* and attach it to your wall
  • Attach them to the wall with magnets
  • DIY a hanging basket

*A trellis is a framework of light wood or metal bars used as a support for plants

7. Add a giant whiteboard or chalkboard

A large chalk or whiteboard is a perfect functional addition to a living space. A chalkboard adds a rustic air to the room, while a whiteboard is the contemporary alternative—and you don't have to stick to just white (they're available in a variety of shades and prints).

8. Mount your television

Adding a flat screen to your wall can be a great way to free up space on top of your media cabinet, enhance your wall, and update the entire look of your living room or bedroom.

The design of a wall can be an expression of your individuality. Choose your favorite colours, patterns and designs that match your personality and that positively affect your mood. Find what works for you and your space and make it work. Before you know it, your walls will be your very own masterpiece!
