The property lies on the slopes of Devon Valleys northern ridge and rises from 200m to 310m above sea level. This area is known as Devons Crest.

Background on the area: Devon Valley was demarcated in 1997 as a Ward within the Stellenbosch Region. It runs north-south and lies to the west and alongside the village of Stellenbosch. Through it flows a tiny river, the Veldwachters river, or Shepherds Creek, which joins up with the Eerste Rivier (First River). The valley is open to the south and demarcated by low hills on the other sides. The total area is 2 000ha while that under vine is 705ha. Most of the vineyards are red.

The slopes of the valley are generally blessed with very good, deep soils formed by decomposed granite. Their colour is either yellow or red-brown and they have a fairly high clay fraction though it is well dispersed. At the bottom of the valley the soils are generally poorer and mainly alluvial, often grey-white in colour, under which lies a fairly hard clay layer which limits these soils.

Devon Valley is one of Stellenboschs best-kept secrets, both scenically and viticulturally. Vines have flourished here since the 18th Century and it has an enviable reputation not only for the red wines that have been made here but also as a source of premium grapes.

Aspect: The whole site has a southerly aspect and grand views of False Bay, which is approximately 30km away, and the mountains surrounding Stellenbosch.

Soil: The soils are chiefly deep decomposed granite and have a red-brown or terra cotta colour. They contain a high percentage of clay (about 30%) which is well dispersed throughout the profile and aids with water retention.

Near the top of the property there are stones, remnants of the mother material, in the profile (such soils are called Glenrosa) while further down these are absent (Clovelly or Hutton).

Devon Crest is fully planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet franc, Petit Verdot and a small vineyard of Semillon. The last two varieties produced their first crop in 2012.

Winery: 1 000m with a maximum processing capacity of approximately 200 tons but more optimally around 170 tons.

Wines: Bordeaux styled estate red blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Sauvignon blanc, Riesling Semillon Straw Wine

Plantings: Cabernet Sauvignon (1993), 2.72ha Merlot (1989) 1.91ha, Pinotage (1997) 2.03ha, Cabernet franc (2004) 0.80ha, Merlot (2008) 1.32ha, Petit Verdot (2008) 0.29ha, Semillon (2008) 0.86ha.

Production: Own vineyards currently supply approximately 60 tons per annum (2.47ha not in production yet).

We currently sell about 6000 cases of 12 bottles, by value 70% in South Africa and 30% export. Main export markets are UK and The Netherlands/Belgium. Excellent distribution relationships with Meridian Wine Merchants in South Africa, Enotria in the UK and Allied Vintners International in Belgium.

Water Supply:Borehole (approximately 2 000 litres per hour) on the property. Automated system that pumps water to a reservoir (new reservoir will be built by current owner) from where it is fed under gravity to buildings and a drip-irrigation system for the vineyards. No municipal water or scheme water.
