Historical Manor House
This Manor House is situated 20kms from South Africa's famous holiday town Knysna and 15 minutes from the beautiful sandy beaches of Buffalo Bay. Here lies this stunning 18th-century country estate nestled in the foothills of the Outeniqua mountains. Hectares of beautiful forests, citrus orchards, rambling gardens, and a lake.
The property is 213 hectares in extent and has been utilized for various agricultural purposes from its founding (the 1860s) up until the 1990s. Since that time the farming of fruit has become a secondary form of income with the development of various buildings and alterations for use within the tourism industry.
The property was completely renovated in June 2000, and the result has been greatly appreciated by all of her guests.
Following is a brief summary of the buildings and important structures on the estate.
The Manor House was built during the early 1860s by an English gentleman named Henry Barrington and still retains its obvious English Heritage. It is an eight bedroomed house and includes a spacious lounge, a library, a large dining room, a bar area, kitchen and laundry area. The rooms have been built using the indigenous woods of the Knysna area and the ambiance of the house can only be appreciated by an actual visit to the property. The furniture of the manor reflects the history of the building and includes crystal chandeliers made in 1864 and furniture from the 1950s.
Lawnwood Lodge is a purposely built guest lodge with 19 bedrooms and a spacious lounge area with office space. All rooms are tastefully decorated and are furnished with antiques from different eras. The outside walls of the building are clad with local stone giving this otherwise modern structure an old world appearance.
The Restaurant seats up to 100 diners at a time and is decorated and furnished in such a style that makes it sympathetic to the general feel of the property.
The Portland Arms Pub is housed in the oldest building on the farm and has an ambiance that is almost impossible to replicate. Various amenities including a pool table, a dart board, and a large screen television can be found in an adjoining room.
Other buildings on the estate include a large farm barn, two managers houses, staff quarters, an old farm house which has three bedrooms all en-suite as well as a one bedroom apartment, currently in use as the owner's residence.
There are three water dams on the farm one of which covers an area of seven hectares and is up to 10 meters deep. This dam alone will allow any purchaser a vast array of possibilities. The volume of water on the property is a great asset and will be of great assistance should further development be visualized.
There are a number of game animals on the estate including Gnu, Bontebok, Zebra, and Ostrich. The indigenous forest on the farm has a wide range of wild life.
The estate borders the Knysna River on its eastern extremity.
Previously it was graded by the South African Tourist Board as a four-star luxury guest house and has been run as such.
There are approximately 15 000 fruit trees on the estate including tangerines and plums.
At least half of the orchards are under irrigation.
Possible usage of the property is diverse and could include: - Equestrian, golf, private school, hotel, medical clinic, rehab center, wine estate or even as a private home.
The whole estate is surrounded by the most beautiful views of the Outeniqua mountains and indigenous forest. The incredible sunsets and quiet ambiance of the estate have to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
Plans for a further 5 double units (20 beds) have been approved.
This property is totally unique allowing for endless possibilities because of the Historic Manor House and the large volume of water.
