Historical Manor House
This Manor House is situated 20kms from South Africa''s famous holiday town Knysna 15 minutes from beautiful sandy beaches of Buffalo Bay, lies this stunning 18th country estate nestled in the foothills of the Outeniqua mountains. 213 hectares of beautiful forests, citrus orchards, gardens and lake.
The property is 213 hectares in extent and has been utilized for various agricultural purposes from its founding (1860s) up until the 1990s. Since that time the farming of fruit has become a secondary form of income with the development of various buildings and alterations for use within the tourism industry.
The property has been completely renovated in June 2000, and the result has been greatly appreciated by all of our guests.
The following is a brief summary of the buildings and important structures on the estate.
The Manor House was built during the early 1860s by an English gentleman named Henry Barrington and still retains its obvious English Heritage. It is an eight bedroomed house and includes a large lounge, library, large dining room, bar area, kitchen and laundry area. The rooms have been built using the indigenous woods of the Knysna area and the feel of the house can only be appreciated by actually visiting the property. The furniture of the manor reflect the history of the building including crystal chandeliers made in 1864 up to furniture from the 1950s.
Lawnwood Lodge is a purposely built guest lodge with 19 bedrooms and a large lounge area and office space. All rooms are tastefully decorated and are furnished with antiques from different eras. The outside walls of the building have been clad with local stone and the effect has been to give this modern structure a very old world appearance.
The Restaurant can seat up to 100 diners and is of course also decorated and furnished in a way that is sympathetic to the general feel of the property.
The Portland Arms Pub has been housed in the oldest building on the farm and has an ambience that is almost impossible to replicate. Various amenities including a pool table, dart board and a large screen television are available in an adjoining room.
Other buildings on the estate include a huge farm barn, two managers houses, staff quarters a two bedroom old farm house which has three bedrooms all en-suite and a one bedroom appt is currently being used as the owners residence.
There are three water dams on the farm one of which covers an area of seven hectares and is up to 10 metres deep. This dam alone will allow any purchaser a vast array of possibilities to utilize the estate for whatever purpose they volume of water on the property is a great asset and will be of great assistance should further development be visualised.
There are a number of game animals on the estate including Gnu, Bontebok, Zebra and ostrich. The indigenous forest on the farm has a wide range of wild life.
The estate borders the Knysna River on its eastern extremity.
Previous running as a four start luxury guest house, this grading was received from the South African Tourist Board.
There are approximately 15000 fruit trees on the estate including tangerines and plums.
At least half of the orchards are under irrigation.
Possible usage of the property is diverse and could include: - Equestrian, golf, private school, hotel, medical clinic, rehab centre, wine estate or even as a private home.
The whole estate is surrounded by the most beautiful views of the Outeniqua mountains and indigenous forest. The incredible sunsets and quiet ambience of the estate has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
Plans for a further 5 double units (20 beds) have been approved for planning consent.
