Well positioned corner plot of approximately 915 square meters overlooking, green belts, lakes and ocean and with awesome mountain views.

Betty's Bay is a small holiday town situated on the Overberg coast of South Africa's Western Cape province. It is located 96 km from Cape Town beneath the rugged Kogelberg Mountains and is on the scenic R44 ocean drive between Pringle Bay and Kleinmond. Clarence Drive has been named as the most picturesqyue Drive in the world.

Arthur Youldons daughter, Betty, gave her name to Bettys Bay. Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War did construction and worked on the road from Gordons Bay. During the War Cape Hangklip assumed strategic military importance as a sentinel guarding the Eastern Shore of False Bay from the lurking menace of the U-boats.At present Bettys Bay and surrounding towns of Kleinmond, Rooiels and Pringle Bay are growing at a phenomenal rate as not only retired people settle here, but new and varied businesses are established as well light industries, especially in the building trade.

Bettys Bay stretches between ocean and mountain for 13 kilometres, has no street lights, mostly gravel roads and numerous green belts allow for small wild life to multiply and roam free. Star gazing if one of the most awesome past times to be had when night falls. Two beaches allow for long leisurely strolls on seemingly endless stretches of soft sand whilst Draadbaai can keep keen divers and fishermen busy for hours. The Penquin colony is another memorable site to visit.

The lakes are suitable for swimming, rowing, windsurfing and host some fresh water fish species for the more relaxed angler. In Bettys Bay you find waterfalls and hiking trails that wind all along the mountains through to the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens which offers the most inspiring variety of indigenous plants and flowers.

Betty's Bay has many natural mountain streams, waterfalls, lakes and an abundance of bird life and the whole town is part of a nature reserve. There are still at least 4 wild leopards, lizards, snakes, mice, trout, dragonflies, porcupines, pheasants, land birds, steenbok, duiker, rock rabbit, baboons, mongoose, buck, porcupines, otters, pheasants many types of frogs, freshwater crabs, and many other small animals.

It is a bird paradise with marine birds like the endangered black toby, penguins, a big variety of marine life, fish, perlemoen, crayfish and protected plants like disas, proteas, pincussions, ferns and has a wide variety of natural fynbos and flowers and other plants in abundance.

It feels like living in a park permanently. The water table is high and Bettys Bay gets lots of rain.

The penguin colony at Stoney Point is one of the main attractions. Dolphins and whales can often be seen closeby.

Bettys Bays history is long and varied. Early traces of habitation have been found at Cape Hangklip. Stone hand-axes dating back thousands of years have been unearthed. Khoisan strandlopers left their fish traps and kitchen middens along the beach as well as in mountain caves bordering the seashore. The area was isolated as a result of the Kogelberg Mountains that serves as a barrier to the European expansion in the Western Cape. For two centuries this area became the stronghold of outlaws or drosters runaway slaves and criminals.

In 1739 a grazing farm was granted to Andries Grove near to present Bettys Bay but the area remained mostly uninhabited by humans though wild life such as hyena, zebra, bontebok, buffalo and eland roamed free.

By the middle of the 19th century a small fishing community had established themselves at Jongensklip today the small fishing harbour in Kleinmond, near Bettys Bay. A Whaling station was established in 1913 at Stoney Point in Bettys Bay. About 30 morgen was leased to Mr Frank Cook the owner of a small shipping company. This was known as the Waaigat Whaling Station and the South Cross Whaling company started operating from there. By 1930 however because of the low price of whale oil the Whaling station finally closed.

There are 1800 species of plants in the 70sq.km in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, the highest density of fynbos in the world. Only in the richest tropical rainforests is a higher density of plant species per hectare. The plants grow in the mountains, on the coastline, in estuaries and marshlands. 77 of these species are nowhere else to be found on earth and 150 are rare, endangered and vulnerable.

The Cederberg in the west and Baviaanskloof in the east along the coastal areas form the Cape Floral Kingdom of 41 000 sq. km. which is 0,04% of the earths surface. In this area there are 7200 species of fynbos of which 5000 are only to be found in Kogelberg. That is why Bettys Bay is the epicentre of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Fynbos is mainly divided into proteas, ericas, restios and brunias. Veld fires may cause rare species to germinate again, eg. the golden protea (Mimetes stokoei) that was discovered in 1922 and was last seen in 1967. It was accepted to be extinct. It is a tall, silvery, shining plant with a salmon-pink flower head. In 2001 the reserve manager at Kogelberg discovered 24 golden protea plants high up in the mountains, 2 years after the big veld fire in 1999.

Kogelberg Nature Reserve is a World Heritage Site and is the first Unesco Biosphere Reserve in South Africa. It is unique because of the sharp rise of the mountains from the sea. Kogelberg Peak is 1260m. high and the area gets about 2000mm. rain per year. The high rainfall causes the water table to rise and creates waterfalls, mountain streams, swamps and lagoons.

Invest in this beautiful part of the Cape Whale Coast and raise your family on fresh air in the very heart of nature, as it was intended to be.

Your chance to acquire property in paradise.
