Yzerfontein is a small harbour town with about 2000 inhabitants. It is on the West Coast of South Africa about 80 km from Cape Town. The name means Iron Fountain.
Yzerfontein is known for its Sixteen Mile Beach, the longest uninterrupted sandy beach on the South African coastline, stretching north from the main beach of the town, to the West Coast National Park, which borders the town. Dassen Island, another nature reserve, is about 10 km offshore.
Yzerfontein is ideal for whale-spotting. Southern Right, Humpback whales and dolphins are regularly seen.
In town you are spoiled for choice from various Restaurants, shops, walking trails, long stretches of sandy beaches, ample rock fishing, wind surfing, Big wave surfing, Tennis & Bowls. The small craft harbour provide a safe launching facility for deep sea fishing, wet bikes and water ski with an active NSRI station and Medical facilities for any emergencies.
South Africa's West Coast is washed by the Benguela current which originates in the Antarctic, and thus the sea water is very chilly.

Hiking trails such as the Darling Stagger, Elandsfontein Private Reserve, Grotto Bay Coastal Nature Reserve, and Tienie Versveld Reserve are popular. You can also explore the Bokbaaivygie flower trail with its explosion of colour in springtime, and the Schaapeiland Trail along the coast.
