Growing buyer demand for fixer-uppers in Highlands North

Affordable fixer-uppers in the Highlands North and Highlands North Extension areas are in extremely high demand due to its central location, good sized stands and outstanding value.

“We’re seeing high demand for older homes in the Highlands North Area. The area appeals to buyers across all demographics and backgrounds and is a big market for first-time buyers, starter couples and young families,” according to Adrienne Hersch Properties area specialists Eli Machet and Marion Rosenberg.

Eli says two-bedroom homes in the area fetch between R1.2 and R1.6 million, three-bedroom homes sell for between R1.6 and R2.2 million and four-bedroom homes can achieve anywhere from R2.3 – R3 million.

He says sellers with cottages can add between R150 000 to R300 000 to their sale price.

Marion says a key attraction for buyers to the area is the classic golden oldie vibe offered by many of the homes in the area including original features such as parquet flooring and pressed ceilings.

“Homes in Highlands North are solid and well-built. Many of these homes were built in an era where craftsmanship was priority. Most are set on a stand of 495sqm offering space, big bedrooms and living areas and great sized gardens There are also many double stands available in the area which are highly sought-after by young families.” “There are plenty of good reasons to buy fixer-uppers. They are often significantly cheaper than today’s more modern homes and allow buyers to create a living space according to their own tastes and needs,” she continues.

Highlands North and Highlands North extension provides easy access to excellent private schools including St Mary’s, SPARK Bramley, Yeshiva College, Roedean, St John’s College, Saheti School, King David Linksfield as well as reputable public schools such as H.A Jack, King Edward School, Fairways Primary School, Norwood Primary School, Waverley Girls’ High School, Northview High School and Sandringham High School.

The area is also ideally placed close to Norwood Mall, Balfour Park Shopping Centre, Melrose Arch and Grant Avenue’s strip of quirky boutiques and trendy restaurants.

Another big attraction for buyers to the area is its proximity to main arterials including the M1 Highway, Louis Botha Avenue and the N3, as well as places of worship.
