Diverse ways to upgrade your home security in 2022

Home security systems have come a long thanks to the evolution of smart technologies. As convenient as a smart security system might be, many South Africa buyers still ask for good old-fashioned safeguards such as burglar bars and security gates.

Before reinventing the home’s entire security system, Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, suggests covering the basics first. “Some of the most desirable security features include alarm systems, burglar bars and security gates, as well as raised exterior walls. If these are already installed, security cameras, smart locking systems, and other technological security features then become further value adds.”

For those who are unsure of what is meant by the term, Goslett explains that smart security simply refers to security devices – such as locks, sensors, and cameras – that can connect to the internet and can be controlled through an app. In an entirely connected home, all smart security features can speak to one another and can be controlled through a central device or app.

“Because smart security systems are not as widespread as they are internationally, the demand for these features is not as high as it is for more traditional forms of security. Although many buyers will still find these features valuable, they might not be telling their agent to find homes that specifically have these smart systems installed,” Goslett explains.

Burglar bars, on the other hand, often make a buyer’s wish list. For those who do not like the look of the metal bars, Goslett recommends considering their clear polycarbonate cousins. “Although not quite as strong as metal bars, these do still offer phenomenal security value and the best part about them is that they are transparent so they will not affect the aesthetic appeal of the home,” he states.

Another appealing aspect among buyers is a well-maintained and appealing perimeter wall that offers both security as well as charm. “Although effective, barbed wire fences or tall vibracrete walls do not offer great curb appeal. Consider options that would still allow the home to be appealing from the street view, as these will add more value to the home,” says Goslett.

When deciding on ways to upgrade the home’s security, Goslett recommends that homeowners should always consider which features will have a positive impact on the resale value of the property. “Those who are unsure of which features will increase the value of their own home the most should contact a local real estate expert who can provide guidance in this regard,” Goslett concludes.
