Milpark’s Stanley Beer Yard introduces a monthly event to educate guests on the beauty of craft beer. For Joburgers looking for a fun way to spend an evening out, Craft Beer 101 is the perfect answer.

With the explosion of the craft beer industry over the last few years, it’s almost no longer acceptable for trendy drinkers in cool new Joburg bars to simply ask for a beer. Instead, beer is now a multifaceted and hugely varied category – there are now endless flavours, strengths and styles to choose from to suit your taste. With so much on offer from local breweries, it’s hard to know where to start, but Stanley Beer Yard has come to the rescue with their newest monthly event: Craft Beer 101.

Led by certified beer cicerones, Wayne Johnson and Rob Cass, Craft Beer 101 evenings are as entertaining as they are educational. Seated at long benches around the wooden tables in this warm and intimate venue, guests can order delicious bar food from the Stanley Beer Yard menu to accompany the beers they taste. It’s a relaxed and unpretentious night out, where discussion, laughter, and, of course, beer enjoyment are all encouraged, and it pairs perfectly with the BBQ basted baby back ribs, handmade salted chips, and hot smoked wings. Surrounded by the quirky country decor and warm lighting, it’s the perfect place to get to know beer a little better.

To begin with, guests are introduced to a lager, then a pilsner, weissbier, bitter, IPA, and finally a stout. Each of the beer styles is discussed, with Wayne and Rob talking about their originals, development, and what makes them unique, and encouraging guests to taste each one with an open mind – and an open palate. Though taste itself takes centre stage, importance is also placed on colour and scent, so that by the end of the class guests should be able to identify not just the differences between different beer styles, but the similarities too. For Joburgers looking for a new fun way to spend an evening out, Craft Beer 101 is the perfect answer. Tickets are R50 and the next event is taking place on 15 June.
