GARDENER ROSS WINS TOP GOLF COURSE AWARD
Ernie Els signature golf course voted Best New Course in Gauteng 2008
16 July 2008: Gauteng’s first Ernie Els signature golf course - the centre piece of the Gardener Ross Golf & Country Estate in Centurion - has been awarded Complete Golfer’s Best New Course in Gauteng 2008, beating off a string of other regional courses in a hotly-contested field.
According to developer, Deon Winterbach, CEO of Devco Africa, the award is recognition for the planning and procedures that have been put in place to establish Gardener Ross Golf & Country Estate as one of the leading lifestyle estates in South Africa. “We have an exceptional Ernie Els signature golf course and to win an award such as this for a newly developed estate shows that we are on track to realizing something very special here.” Winterbach cites that the existing top facilities such as the clubhouse, restaurant, changing facilities and driving range have contributed to the growing popularity of the golf course.
Designer, Ernie Els says that the award is great news as the course perfectly complements the estate with its natural beauty. “Teeing off with the Magaliesberg Mountains as a backdrop is a great feeling and unique to any other course that I have played in the world.” He continues, “Its popularity is no surprise to me as Gardener Ross always guarantees a great round, especially as it is one of the longest in the Southern Hemisphere.
“Playing golf at Gardener Ross will always be special for me as it is located on the farm which belonged to my grandfather, who introduced me to the game of golf.”
“Gardener Ross has proved that you can blend a world-class golf course and a natural environment seamlessly. With Ernie’s backing and design of our golf course, coupled with our committed development team we approach our final phase with renewed excitement,” concludes Winterbach.
Ernie Els is golf’s international ambassador. The United States, the Bahamas, China, South Africa, Mauritius and Dubai are places that he has called home in the past 18 months. For the record, this is not Els’ tournament schedule but a list of locations where he is establishing his blossoming career as a golf course designer.
Early in his professional golf career, Els came to understand that he had a passion and talent for golf course design. “In tournaments, I found myself analyzing the design strengths and weaknesses of the holes that I was playing. I kept a mental catalogue of my likes and dislikes, figuring it might come in handy someday. It taught me to appreciate the subtleties of golf course architecture.”
His first opportunity at design came shortly after winning the 1997 U.S. Open. The developers of Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Maryland came calling, and Els was eager to oblige. The course opened in 2000 to instant acclaim, bringing home several top ratings for daily fee courses in the U.S. including Golf Magazine’s list of “Best New Places You Can Play.” His design debut prompted this response from golf writer Jeff Thoreson of the Washington Golf Monthly. “With the way golfers in the Washington area are drawn to Whiskey Creek, Ernie Els could make a run at being the best player-architect at this point in time.”
Eager to continue the success of Whiskey Creek, but not wanting to stretch him too thin and jeopardize his tournament golf, Ernie joined forces with Jack Nicklaus to create a formidable design team. Ernie Els Design, Ltd is a joint venture between the two legendary golfers. Els contribute his personal time and his “brand”, and Nicklaus contributes the staff and technical support to bring the golf course to completion.
Since the company’s formation in late 2000, the company’s design portfolio has been growing at a steady pace. Els’ second effort, the Savannah Course at Mission Hills in Shenzhen, China, opened for play in 2001. His first design in South Africa was launched with great fanfare later that year and is set to open in late 2004. Oubaai Golf Estate in Els’ hometown of George has been the most successful selling golf estate ever in South Africa.
New projects are set to commence in different corners of the globe.
1. Gardener Ross Golf and Country Estate – Johannesburg, South Africa. Gardener Ross Golf and Country Estate is a joint venture between Devco Africa (Pty) Ltd and
Acc-Ross Holdings Limited. What makes this development incredibly special to Ernie Els is that his grandfather, Ernie Vermaak, grew up on this exact 690 hectares of land in and around 1918, a farm then known as Knoppies Laagte. Oupa Vermaak was also the instigator of the golf-fever that was to take hold of the next two Els generations
