ABOUT OUR HERITAGE MUSEUM

Our Heritage Museum in Adelaide is a national monument and consists of an old parsonage and its outbuildings. The Late Dutch reformed church dating from 1860 to 1964 has large grounds and exquisite gardens to wander around.

Step inside this colonial era house and explore the many collections of clothes, porcelain, textiles, glass, silver and wedge wood. You get a sense of what it was like in those times and there is a lot to learn about the history of the area.ABOUT MARTELLO TOWER

The Martello Tower in Fort Beaufort is a little garrison dating back to the nineteenth century during the Napoleonic Wars. Many Martellos were built in several different countries, with two of them being in South Africa.

The Fort Beaufort Martello is the only one in the world that was not built near the sea. Usually a Martello tower has two levels and is about 12 meters high and consists of a battalion with an officer and 15 to 25 men. This round structure was made of think stone walls with a flat topped roof with space for artillery that had 360 degrees movement in order to protect the fort.ABOUT KATBERG TRAIL

Start:Mpofu Game Reserve near Fort Beaufort in the Winterberg region of the Amatolas

Finish: Benholm Forest Station on the Old Katberg Pass

Duration: 51 km over 3 days

Fitness: moderate to easy

Our tip: visit Victoria Bridge, a triple-arch bridge built by Andrew Geddes Bain that straddles the Kat River in Fort Beaufort. Now a national monument, it is still in use.

The Kat River Valley is the site of one of the best and most effective forts built to act as a buffer between the Xhosa people and the Settlers who had recently entered this terrain in what was known as the Frontier Wars.ABOUT HOGSBACK 4X4 TRAIL

Once youve visited this area, youll know why booking yourHogsback accommodationis something really special. This little village in the mountains oozes romance and has a distinctively ethereal allure to it. It is characterised by dense forest, towering mountains, plummeting valleys, waterfalls and a village that is full of character.

Its practically impossible to visit Hogsback without exploring its exquisite countryside. There are a number of hiking and walking trails, of course. But, to add a little adrenalin into the mix, the 4 x 4 trails are a must.
