The Goldfields area's Sesotho name is Lejweleputswa which means “Grey Rock”. Besides gold mines, the area is renowned for its uranium, coal and diamond mines. Other industries include steel, lumber, beef and dairy, maize and sunflowers. Welkom is the largest town and is one of only a few pre-planned cities in the world. It has received worldwide acclaim for its traffic management system, which has led to it being dubbed the “circle city.”
