Velddrif was named by a farmer who had taken his livestock across the Berg River by way of a drift to better grazing, a pontoon was later built and subsequently replaced by the bridge as used today.

The village is situated on the Berg River Tidal Estuary with a flood plain of approximately 60 km. The river originates from the Franshoek Mountains and exits into the Atlantic Ocean at Laaiplek harbour, the mooring facility for Fishing boats.

Once a year the Berg River is host to one of the biggest Canoe Marathons in South Africa, a distance of approximately 240km, from Paarl to Velddrif, taxing the canoeist''s skills to the hilt.

The Estuary supports large numbers of plant and animal species, 210 bird species have been recorded of which 25 are deemed to be of national importance.

Five Red Data species are to be found here as well it is listed as an Important Birding Area with BirdLife SA.

Thirty-five fish species have been identified of which 80% use the estuary as a nursery.

The estuary has enormous economic significance as it accommodates a fishing harbour and a bokkom industry on its bank. Salt pans can be seen from the road, often with flocks of flamingos present.

Economic activity consists of fishing, tourism, and salt production.

The fishing industry is substantial in Velddrif the town is part of the Crayfish Route.

Bokkoms, Snoek and West Coast lobster are some of the ocean delicacies to enjoy here.

The area attracts tourists from all-over ,also Internationally.

Port Owen with its yacht basin is frequented by Yachties from over the Globe.
