CARE Awards: It’s all about the children

Tyson Properties’ Westville office supports a crèche called Sondela, in Chesterville, which looks after about 130 children between the ages of three months and five years.

Lee Ellis, Tyson Properties’ Inland Director, explains: “We have undertaken to resolve certain problem areas within the crèche but we must stress that we are not the only group that assists Sondela. We just hope to make a difference by doing something in our local community to uplift previously disadvantaged children.”

Lee’s team has started a vegetable garden at the crèche, which is protected by shade cloth that it donated. “Due to the young age of the children we are obliged to both water and weed the vegetable garden three times a week. The idea is that these vegetables will supplement the children’s meals.”

The branch also has plans to upgrade the lighting and install overhead fans in the classrooms, repair the toilets and basins, install a rain-water tank for the garden, and distribute winter woollies.
