Win A Home: rooms with attitude

Private Property South Africa

WaH RoomOur homes are our castles and we all generally have a particular room that we love more than others. This week we peeked inside some of the homes featuring on Private Property’s Win A Home show in a hunt to find rooms that really stand out.

We started off on a bit of a serious note and opened the door of a delightful study in a five-bedroom, five-bathroom home, priced at R33-million, in Constantia in Western Cape. While we admit that dragging yourself away from the landscaped garden (complete with mountain views and a stream) could prove to be difficult, settling down in this large, luxuriously-appointed study will make your working life a breeze.

The next unique room to come onto our radar is a bar. Although incredibly popular with homeowners in the 1970s, we all seemed to lose interest in this little haven of entertainment over the last couple of decades. The good news for entertainment lovers is that the bar is back and guess what: it's bigger and glitzier than ever before. We’re actually so taken with the idea of having a pub in a house that we’ve selected two homes that boast two totally different bar rooms.

The bar is back!

The first is situated in a gorgeous home in the Simbithi Eco Estate on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The large room has fold-away doors leading onto a wooden deck, which is the ideal place to kick back and relax. Priced at R9.5-million, this home boasts four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms, and is ideal for those who want to entertain in style.

The second property for your consideration is situated in Morningside, Durban. Priced at R5.45-million this colonial charmer has a bar-room that fairly shouts “come around and party”.

Having a bar in your home is one thing, but how about owning a complete wine cellar and tasting room? Sound appealing? Then this next home could be for you. Priced at R12.5-million and situated on the beautiful Thuli Estate near Dainfern in Gauteng, this 900sqm home is set on a 9 888sqm stand. The wine cellar appears to have been imported directly from France and incorporates a large wine-tasting area as well as ample storage space for the avid wine collector or drinker.

Surround sound

The last home for this week is priced at R65-million. We'd love to discuss all of its features, which include an absolutely stunning view of a large section of Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean, but we've restricted ourselves to just one room in this masterpiece of design – the home theatre. In our opinion, this delightful feature should be a must-have in every home. However it has to be said that even if every home enjoyed watching entertainment in style, homeowners would be hard-pressed to match this particular space. If the idea of watching movies, sport or your favourite series from the comfort of large, reclining, leather armchairs appeals, then we have found the property for you. Man oh man, you can almost taste the popcorn!

Watch Win A Home at 8 on SABC3 every Thursday. And remember:
