Athlone Girls’ High School is ranked as one of the top schools in Gauteng, and in the top 400 schools in the country. The school is conveniently situated on the local bus route, on large, well-maintained grounds in Observatory.

At Athlone Girls’ High School, the development of confident, able, well-balanced girls is the central focus. The safe and caring environment at the school is a platform for the discovery of talent and the achievement of goals, while simultaneously developing a range of skills to aid in the success of every learner. Inherent in this is encouragement of self-esteem, motivation and a strong work ethic that ensures excellence in all of their future pursuits. Academic distinction is rewarded by educators, and the potential and aptitude of every girl is nurtured and honed by the creation of a stimulating curriculum.

Athlone Girls’ High provides learners with a range of enriching events and activities to complement their academic lives, aid them in building confidence, and endow them with proficiency in a number of areas. This includes a Pastel Accounting Course, involvement in the City Wide High Schools Business Plan Competition and the Civic Voices Project. In addition to this, and as many of the school’s learners come from disadvantaged environments, Athlone offers a number of in-house activities to further expand opportunities to its girls. This includes participation in the provincial schools’ UN Debate, the KPMG Sanlam Entrepreneurial Development Programme, and the prevalence of Service Ambassadors in the school who play a pivotal mentorship role and are proud representatives of the school and its ethos. These events run concurrently with the school’s involvement in the Johannesburg Junior Council, the Johannesburg Student Council and the GIBS Spirit of Youth Programme to name a few.

The sporting and cultural extra-mural offerings at Athlone Girls’ High complement the development of learners beyond the classroom. With girls actively participating in soccer, hockey, netball, athletics, basketball, netball and tennis, the school’s sporting representatives continuously bring added pride to the school. In addition to this, the school choir is held in tremendously high esteem and has been ranked in first place at district level over the years.

Both within the classroom and from an extra-mural standpoint, the Dramatic Arts at Athlone Girls’ High has become part of the school’s tradition. As a form of cultural and personal expression, the girls participate in a number of Drama opportunities at a number of levels. The school performs in festivals, showcasing the perfect balance between talent, discipline and practise.

Girls at Athlone Girls’ High School operate within a culture of respect, consideration and care. The learners and educators at the school make up a family that creates a happy atmosphere in their dealings with one another. The Lunch Team sacrifices their own break times to provide fresh sandwiches to those in need, and it is very telling of the values of the learners that they give of themselves in this manner. Martin Luther King Junior said: “We cannot all be famous, but we can all be great because greatness comes through service.” Athlone Girls’ High School salutes the greatness of the girls it serves.
