Northern Suburbs cafés that take the cake

Check out these four cafes in the Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs where you can indulge your sweet tooth in style

High teas, kitchen teas or just meeting friends for coffee and cake, the Northern Suburbs aren’t short of quirky and decorative cafes where you really can have your cake and eat it. The cafe’s also cater for special events, with lunches and savoury dishes too, but right now we’re talking sweet decadence.

Boere Sjiek

The Okavango Industrial Estate in Brackenfell is an unlikely place to look for sensory indulgence, but when you step through the doors you enter a decorative fantasy worthy of a place in Alice in Wonderland. The elaborate chandeliers, table settings, silk flowers and beautiful homeware from France are all for sale, and the cakes live up to the over-the-top setting, from a luscious Oreo chocolate and cheesecake combo, to red velvet, lemon meringues, apple strudels and a rainbow Banting cheesecake.

Soet Bistro

An opulent gold-iced cherry caramel cake sets the tone at Soet Bistro in Durbanville, alongside an irresistible selection of chocolate cakes and cheesecakes. The ambience is light and contemporary with wooden tables, tall button-back upholstered benches, and sofas through the archway into the adjoining art gallery.

Chocolat

French country elegance is the mood at Durbanville’s Chocolat, where there’s a peaceful courtyard and veranda to spill out onto in summer, and popular cakes that include a Brazilian nougat dark chocolate, Le Chocolat, and a green fig and pecan cheesecake, among several others on display.

Isabellas

If shopping and cake are your idea of a blissful combo, stop in at Isabella’s in Willowbridge, where the sumptuous cakes revive energy for more retail therapy. Pumpkin caramel, carrot macadamia, apple and nut with salted caramel are some of the more unusual flavours, with plenty more in the way of chocolate and Nutella indulgence.

DIY tea

For a high tea at home, The Velvet Cake Company in Bellville supplies all the cake glitz and glamour you can imagine. The spring velvet cakes come in a variety of colours, and the cupcakes (hummingbird, milk tart and more) are loaded with the cafe’s signature cream cheese frosting. See more at thevelvetcakeco.com.
