Cowan House Co-educational Preparatory - A “School in the Garden”

Private Property South Africa
Claire Fraser

Located on a 10 hectare campus on the cusp of the Midlands countryside and the metropolis of Pietermaritzburg, Cowan House creates a second home environment for its children.

Cowan House caters for pre-primary (Grade RR) to Grade 7. It is intent on thorough preparation of each individual to reach their potential and achieve their goals. At all levels, the focus is on the holistic education and development in a caring environment. Inherent in this is the development of a love of learning and a study ethos that will pervade every day and stand them in good stead in all of their pursuits.

The curriculum on offer is suitable for the varying levels, and is kept up-to-date with modern teaching practices and methods. This body of knowledge is conveyed by dedicated teachers, who employ creative and effective ways of engaging the children, transmitting pivotal skills and developing a culture of learning within the student body. Cowan House believes in endowing the boys and girls with a balanced education – where no one subject is more important than any other. In addition to conventional subjects, the school offers Economic Management Science, Design and Technology, as well as music and art – all of these subjects taught by specialist teachers. A high success rate of previous students in high school and beyond is testament to a persisting standard of academic excellence and a well-rounded preparedness. The current Grade 7 boys and girls were all accepted to their high school of choice.

Cowan House further caters for children with special needs. These needs are addressed through individual attention in class, as well as from specialist teachers who offer expert guidance and help.

In addition to the rich academic offerings at Cowan House, a wide range of sports and cultural activities are available. The boys and girls are encouraged to participate to gain the fundamental skills and values that are developed extra-murally, and team sports are compulsory. Cowan House has excellent sporting facilities, including an Indoor Centre. This year fourteen senior primary pupils at Cowan House have been selected for provincial and district representation in rugby, tennis, cricket and hockey and three of the sports coaches also coach at representative level!

Pupils are given a keen sense of social consciousness through outreach initiatives that have been built into the school structure. Most notable among these is the Grade 6 social responsibility project, whereby pupils go to a school in Sweetwaters to teach English as a second language to their students. This is mutually beneficial for the children at both schools, and is an important part of the development of crucial values.

VISION: Know Yourself, Grow in Knowledge, Spirit and Friendship.

VALUES: Based on the Christian Ethos – Be Yourself, Be Reasonable, Be Caring, Be Your Best.
