About ERA, Bloemfontein

This city lies at the cross roads of South Africa and, sooner or later, most people on the road eventually bypass it on the N1 highway en route to the major cities in Gauteng and the rest of the country. It's a city entrenched in South Africa's frontier history having sprung up around a pretty spring surrounded by flowers. "Bloem" was the birth place of the great 20th century fantasy writer JRR Tolkien and is still home to Zola Budd Pieterse, who as a child athlete stole world headlines when she was given British citizenship to compete in the Olympic Games.

Bloemfontein also known as "flower spring" or "fountain of flowers" is the capital city of the Free State Province of South Africa. The city's Sesotho name is Mangaung, meaning "place of cheetahs" and became part of the Mangaung Local Municipality in 2000. Bloemfontein is popularly and poetically known as "the city of roses", owing to the abundance of these flowers and the annual rose festival held there. The city is home to 369,568 residents, while the Mangaung Local Municipality has a population of 645,455. Bloemfontein is served by the Bloemfontein airport.
