Vaal Marina is an established dam-side village in Midvaal, one of the three local municipalities forming the Sedibeng District. Two proposed development programmes are currently active in the district:

Vaal River City a multibillion-rand mixed-use development. As reported in November 2025, all Surveyor General diagrams had been approved, a municipal rates incentive scheme adopted by council, the final traffic study approved, and the Water Use Licence advanced to Phase 3. The R42Barrage Road interchange is complete.

Proposed Vaal Special Economic Zone in March 2026 the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition published a notice of intention to designate an 817-hectare SEZ across Sedibeng, with public comment closing 20 April 2026. Projected contribution: approximately R4 billion to GDP in Phase I, rising to over R10 billion once fully developed, across renewable energy, green hydrogen, green steel, agro-processing, aerospace and logistics.
