Enjoy Christmas in July

4th Avenue Parkhurst’s Christmas in July, 20 and 27 July, brings some cheer to the suburbs this month.

July might now conjure up ideas of Christmas trees, mistletoe or presents wrapped in green and red, but if you’ve watched one too many American Christmas films then maybe the cold of the South African winter has you pining for a little holiday cheer. If that’s the case, then you’re in luck, because each year the shops of Parkhurst’s famous 4th Avenue transform for two nights to create an unlikely (but jolly!) celebration of all things Yuletide for Christmas in July.

Christmas in July

An annual event for this beautiful Joburg suburb, Christmas in July has been drawing visitors from all over the city for years. Embracing the cold evenings as an opportunity to get a little festive, 4th Avenue becomes something of a street carnival, with candlelit shops staying open from 5pm until late, restaurants pulling out all their heaters to let their tables spill onto the pavement, and glühwein being sold at every turn. With fairy lights dotted around, the sound of carols filling the air, and specials that are likely to get you in the Christmas shopping mood, it’s easy to forget that it’s actually mid-July. “You can’t believe how many people support Christmas in July, and how they look forward to it every year,” says Jennifer Ralph, the Fourth Avenue Parkhurst Traders Association, who organise the event every year.

“The event has been happening for years, and it’s almost a sensory experience to be there,” continues Ralph. “For a long time, 4th Avenue was really the only real high street in Joburg’s suburbs, and with its diversity of eateries, entertainment, art and décor, it’s the perfect space for an evening like this. With winters in Johannesburg so cold and often a little dull, we love the idea of bringing a little cheer to the city’s residents in July. We keep the evening light and focused on fun, with many of the traders giving out little Christmas treats along the way, as well as special appearances from Father Christmas and his elves.”

Christmas in July

A great night out for the whole family, Christmas in July remains true to the Parkhurst spirit and is both child and animal-friendly.

Rosebank and Parktown
On trend and arty
Rosebank is a multi-cultural, vibrant and exciting suburb of Johannesburg, with an outdoorsy atmosphere. It is a trendy suburb, business centre and tourist attraction in one of Johannesburg's up-market areas. Although Rosebank is home to many head offices, the district also provides plenty of entertainment to its residents and visitors at its variety of shopping malls, restaurants, markets, luxurious hotels, cinemas, art galleries and night clubs. Parktown is home to many businesses, hospitals, schools, churches and restaurants, whilst still maintaining quiet residential areas. Parktown is an old and established suburb, with leafy avenues and a serene atmosphere. Large mansions are a dominant feature in this exclusive suburb, and new developments are rare.
