Situated on vast, park-like grounds in the idyllic surroundings, New Hanover Preparatory School is a country school offering top quality independent education to enable all learners to achieve their maximum potential.
New Hanover Prep was founded in 1858 by German missionaries. The Christian environment and traditions of good values persist in the thorough preparation of learners for a modern world. The values imparted in the daily schooling of all children include those that will pervade their relations with others, their attitudes towards themselves, their general outlook and assist them in becoming responsible, substantial members of society.
The primary focus of New Hanover Prep is to provide a foundation for all of its children; giving them a starting point upon which to build successful lives. There is an on-site Pre-Primary School where children learn through play. This is achieved in a caring, happy and safe environment through a specific, child-centred programme that is concentrated on their holistic development. These lessons are taught by highly-qualified, devoted teachers that provide direction and stimulation every day.
The Preparatory School operates within high academic standards that are attainable through the support of proficient teachers who oversee small classes. Instruction is in English, and learners can opt between German and Zulu as a second language. Strengths are identified and nurtured, while difficulties are addressed, and help is offered by the learner support department with remedial education for special needs learners. Critical thinking is promoted wherever possible, and the comprehensive development and values are a focus both within the classroom and beyond.
Life skills and leadership are taught in a variety of ways, and excursions and camps complement and fortify these lessons. Outreach is seen as an ideal way of endowing learners with a sense of empathy, and is generally in keeping with the school’s ethos. Through these programmes, the learners are given a range of opportunities to help members of the nearby community. Entrepreneurship is also encouraged as an important skill to learners.
Cultural activities play an invaluable role in reaffirming the lessons in the classroom, and giving learners an opportunity to develop their creativity and have an outlet for their ideas. These activities are also regarded as pivotal to the development of self confidence, and important in the well-rounded education of children.
At New Hanover Preparatory School, sport and physical education are viewed as fundamental in the development of all learners. A wide range of sports and activities are offered, under the professional instruction of coaches. Both team and individual talents are fostered – with any individual athletes receiving support and guidance in regional participation.
