Artificial grass and its uses

Concerned about water usage?

Use artificial grass! Not enjoying winter’s yellowy dry landscape? Use artificial grass. Tired of mowing the lawn? Use artificial grass. Artificial grass is becoming more popular as homeowners seek ways to enhance the aesthetics of their property spaces without the challenges that are unavoidable with natural lawn.

This does not mean that replacing natural lawn with an artificial version moves us away from an environmentally-friendly natural product, in fact, it removes the need for chemical weed control, and as mentioned, conserves water, in some cases up to 70% of your water bill, say some manufacturers. And it is durable, offering years of life, obviously depending on usage. And it is recyclable - by cutting down the worn sections, it can be used for other purposes even doormats.

Major benefits of artificial grass

  • Aesthetically it has a clean look, and can also be effectively used as an interior design element.
  • Resistant to wind and weather.
  • Various price levels, from budget-friendly to premium options.
  • Great for children’s play as it cushions any falls and reduces wear on high-activity spots.
  • Dog-friendly - to a point. It is easier to lift their solid waste, and urine seeps through its porous backing. Digging is also avoided.
  • Patches under trees or in high shade areas are eliminated.
  • You can go on holiday without worrying about your lawn maintenance.
  • Landlords and tenants are worry-free both from a financial and maintenance perspective.
  • The use of harmful pesticides and herbicides are eliminated.
  • Colour remains vibrant for years.

Disadvantages

  • The product can get hot in direct sunlight.
  • It can feel stiff underfoot.
  • Contains non-biodegradable plastics.
  • Needs a drainage system if in a heavy rainfall environment.
  • Does not support a garden’s natural ecosystem.

Maintenance

Whilst artificial grass does offer water and time savings, to keep it looking at its optimum, some maintenance is required:

  • Using a stiff natural bristle brush or broom will clean off dust and debris.
  • Deep cleaning is recommended twice a year using a wet vacuum system and rinsing.
  • Checking for weeds along the edges is important.
  • Pet waste should be removed regularly, and urine stains should be rinsed away to prevent smells.
  • Check to ensure that the level remains uniform, and use grooming brushes if needed.

Site preparation

Seven steps:

  • Clear all vegetation from the area, as well as rocks, pebbles and stones.
  • Compact the area and level it for improved drainage. Consider adding a shock-pad for extra cushioning.
  • Unroll the synthetic grass and cut to fit the shape of the area.
  • Join seams using adhesive.
  • The perimeter needs securing using nails and adhesive, and add drainage outlets.
  • An infill application may be necessary, which is brushed between the artificial grass blades.
  • Groom the blades upwards and smooth out any noticeable infill spots.

Costs

Initially the installation can be expensive if using professionals, but armed with the right knowledge - which can be sourced off the internet - there is no reason it can’t be installed by the homeowner. With a lifespan of up to 25 years dependent on quality, savings on natural grass maintenance can be significant.

Interior

Artificial grass has become quite a trend for undercover patios and indoors. It is easily glued to interior floor surfaces and even if not stuck down, most large furniture pieces will keep it secure.

It is considered a great choice for children’s playrooms, home gyms, and areas affected by cold underfloor seepage. It’s also a popular choice when hosting events at home, keeping spills away from treasured flooring, cushioning dropped breakables, and makes an indoor area look like it's outdoors adding some colour and interest. It can do wonders to transform a space!
