Assumption Convent – A Small School, A Great Vision

Located on the corner of Pandora and Mullins Road in Germiston/Bedfordview, Assumption Convent school is conveniently situated near Bedford Centre and Eastgate.

Assumption Convent is a small Catholic school for girls, consisting of a pupil body that is just over five hundred in number. The average class has twenty-five pupils, which allows for every pupil to receive individual attention and the required amount of personal care, recognition and guidance. The intimate size of the school translates into the school becoming a family environment, which aids in keeping staff motivated, ensuring longstanding service and dedicated teachers. The result is that the individual achievement of each pupil is the focus, and so they are able to procure their full potential.

Founded by the Missionary Sisters of the Assumption in 1946, the school has offered high quality education at an affordable price since its inception. The subjects on offer at the school meet requirements for tertiary study, and make a vast range of careers attainable to its girls. Mathematics is often central to these pursuits, and so the school offers concentrated assistance in this subject. Senior Maths classes are no larger than twenty, and the individual attention afforded to the girls, together with the free daily Maths clinics ensure a proficiency in the subject, and helps those girls who are experiencing any difficulties.

The benefit of the individual attention afforded to the girls is reflected in the fact that the school has had a one hundred percent Matric pass rate for some years with a number of distinctions being awarded for the IEB final examinations. The matriculants of the school continue to excel beyond the school walls in further study, with many girls receiving scholarships on the basis of their academic excellence.

In addition to the high academic standards at Assumption Convent, the school imparts a number of important values such as love, justice, respect and tolerance within the school’s Christian ethos. These principles are inherent in the daily lives of the girls within the school, and extend into their lives, enabling them to make a difference. Although the Catholic tradition of the school is nurtured, Assumption Convent welcomes learners of all faiths and backgrounds, and embraces diversity practically and theoretically in all of its forms.

A range of sporting and cultural extra-mural activities supplement the academic offerings at the school. Many professional coaches are on-hand to aid in the premium instruction in a number of these activities. With a number of national and provincial representatives hailing from the school, the girls excel in inter-house competitions.

All of the activities in the school take place in ever-evolving facilities, to keep abreast of the changes in a modern world. The familiarity with technology is one of the skills that aid in giving girls from Assumption Convent an upper hand in a technologically advancing environment. The school achieves its goal of keeping fees within an affordable range, whilst providing top quality education through a number of financial controls.

The happy, caring atmosphere at Assumption Convent allows for teachers to identify and nurture the God-given talents and gifts of every, individual pupil to make the most of all of their endeavours – in the classroom, on the sports field, in their future pursuits and in their daily lives and interactions with others.
