Beaulieu College – A Modern School In The Country

Private Property South Africa
Claire Fraser

Beaulieu College is a modern, technology-rich high school with a core of traditional values. It is located in Kyalami, Midrand, and has extensive views over the surrounding valleys and hills, creating the ideal environment for learning. The healthy country setting of Beaulieu College is a vibrant hub of activity for both its learners and local residents. Not only does the school offer a rich variety of academic subjects, outreach programmes, sports and cultural offerings, but it has also become a key centre for the local community, who use its extensive facilities to provide a wide range of activities and workshops. The College prides itself on its self-reflective, open and transparent ethos. Our technology enables learners (and their parents) to access their assignments and recent results, tracking their ongoing academic progress from anywhere, at any time, through the internet. All teachers are mentored by colleagues and are required to develop their own programme of continuing professional development, to meet the requirement of a minimum number of CPD points per year. Subject heads and an academic support specialist monitor an intensive academic support programme that is free of charge and also includes reading laboratories for both English and Afrikaans. All of these mechanisms continuously evaluate the progress of every student and teacher in the pursuit of each individual’s happiness and best work. A growing academic enrichment programme is also unfolding at the College for the high-performing student. Advanced Programme (AP) Mathematics which has been offered for the past 11 years will be supplemented by AP English and AP Science in 2012. Accelerated Maths is also offered to Grade 8 & 9 pupils. One of the most distinctive features of our curriculum is the inclusion of Equine Science. The school is located in an area containing the highest number of horses per square kilometre in the world. While most of our students participate in other activities, this niche subject enables a small but core number of students to prepare for careers in Veterinary Science and the Equine industry. The presence of horses on the property makes practical application of the skills taught in Equine Science that much easier. Beaulieu College is also proud of its environmental and outreach programmes, which put our traditional values of Respect, Integrity, Concern and Simplicity into action. A wetland has been developed, an indigenous garden has been planted throughout the property, and an Environmental Committee of senior students oversees large-scale recycling of waste. Outreach programmes include a Saturday School for Grade 4, 5 and 6 for pupils from Diepsloot – the pupils are collected each Saturday and taught Maths, Computer Literacy and English by teachers employed by the College. Our Interact group is Rotary’s most successful in the Midrand area, driving projects that range from visiting the elderly to fundraising for local community organisations. Finally, the College supplements its academic curriculum with a full spectrum of more than 15 different sports and cultural activities including netball (we are one of the top netball schools in Johannesburg), hockey, cricket, rugby, squash, tennis, athletics, soccer, swimming, equestrian, water polo, dance (we are regular winners of the schools’ Inter-High Dance competition), choir, rock band and jazz ensemble, chess, debating and public speaking. Our new Astroturf hockey facility with floodlights is an outstanding, state-of-the-art development that complements the many other sporting facilities offered. Beaulieu College – a modern school embodying a traditional set of core values offering outstanding all round education which prepares pupils for tertiary study at leading institutions worldwide.
