It’s Friday and you are at home with the kids. Again. You’d like a night out but don’t feel like noisy pubs and it’s been years since you have eaten at a restaurant that doesn’t have a jungle-gym. Where can older couples in the Fourways area go without having to put up with teens trying their first beer?Tim Rice and Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, retells the crucifixion of Christ and is set in contemporary Jerusalem. It is loosely based on the gospel, so chances are you already have a decent idea of the plot. There are a few key performances in this show. Jesus is superbly played by Wonderboom frontman Cito, who displays an amazing vocal range and brings a rock-star persona to his performance. Judas is played by former Northcliff resident Jonathan Roxmouth. He has appeared in many sing-along, pop-themed musicals such as Grease and it was interesting to see him play the role of the betrayer. Terrence Bridgett delivers an outlandish and scene-stealing performance as Herod. You will never quite look at Bridgett in the same way when you next see him in a local soap opera!Jesus Christ Superstar is at Montecasino’s Teatro until 26 June 2011.Arena Royale is a new venue in Broadacres that offers a dinner-show experience. Majestique is variety show includes singers Craig Urbani and Véronique Lalouette, a troupe of dancers and cirque acts who perform routines that leave you thinking, “How do they do that?”It’s a new venue and there were some technical glitches on opening night, but all in all the experience is worthwhile. The singers performed upbeat renditions of popular songs and the dancers were always adorned in interesting attire and worked through their routines with aplomb. We were treated to delicious canapés while taking in the sounds of a jazz trio during the interval. The venue includes a cocktail bar and has a few seated areas outside the main arena, so if you would like to get there early (or stay late after the main show) you will find a place to enjoy a drink.Arena Royale is in the Broadacres Lifestyle Centre in Cedar Road. Booking is essential.Tanz Café is an award winning live performance venue at the Buzz Centre on Witkoppen Road. All manner of live acts have appeared at this venue from stand-up comedians such as Chris Forest to musicians as diverse as Dan Platanksy and Prime Circle.Their food is worth mentioning – in many instances the only reason you would go to some venues is the show. Not so with Tanz – their cuisine is decent and you would easily go there for a meal even if there were no shows taking place. They have various menu options should you decide to host a birthday dinner for a large group.Visit www.tanzacafe.co.za to find out who is performing. Booking is essential.Other venues and live shows to look out for: Parkers Comedy & Jive in Montecasino; Rodizio in the Leaping Frog Centre is a Brazilian themed dinner-dance venue complete with a salsa band (maybe not ideal for date night but certainly fun for a group); and Cantare Supper Club (Montecasino) offers a wide variety of live acts – the line-ups change each month.
