The reserve stretches over 90ha of hilly countryside along a rugged coastline only 70 plotshomes have been allowed, spread out over a landscape fully grown with fynbos and natural bush. A number of interesting trails cris-cross the estate. Names are e.g. the whale trail, ou-man-se -pad old mans trail, magic forest, cleopatras pool, and the fynbos trail.

Ballots Bay are known for absolutely magical sunrises, sunsets and moonrises. Often one comes across zebras, blue wildebeests, springbucks, ostriches, massive tortoises, whilst in the bay whales and schools of dolphins are often to be seen.

A fair proportion of the owners are from overseas countries. Quite a few of the homes at Ballots are being run as effective Airbnbs
