DEVELOPMENT IN SALDANHA

Saldanha is poised for significant growth in light of various industrial developments, including an upgrade of its port capacity as well as a new Industrial Development Zone that will bring capital investment of around R83 billion by 2030 and create around 40 000 new job opportunities. This will see an influx of engineers, artisans and workers, and good accommodations, restaurants and offices will be in short supply.

CONCEPT DESIGN

Concept design deals with the big ideas and potential for the site. During this stage you can expect to discuss architectural ideas and spatial planning through loose sketches and rough models. ... Concept design may also include a preliminary selection of materials and finishes.

HISTORY OF THE BUILDING

It is one of the older buildings in the town and was named after the Meresteijn, a ship of the Dutch East Indian Company, that ran aground at the mouth of Saldanha Bay on April 4, 1702, and is one of the most famous shipwrecks on the West Coast. The ship carried a great deal of money for purchases in the East Indies, all of which were lost in this disaster. An English diver, John Lethbridge, tried to salvage this cargo but had to abandon his attempts in rough sea conditions around Jutten Island. Almost 250 years later, in 1971, a team of divers found about 15 000 perfectly preserved gold and silver coins and schillings.

The older residents in Saldanha will tell you that the Meresteijn Restaurant was once a landmark restaurant with the best steak, seafood, dance floor and band and sea view on the West Coast.
