Pietermaritzburg, set amidst the rolling countryside of the Natal Midlands, is one of the best preserved Victorian cities in the world. It's a deeply historical city, characterised by museums and historical routes. Pietermaritzburg is the capital and second largest city in the province. The city is well served with transport links and is conveniently situated between Durban and Johannesburg. It's a thriving modern capital that has carried its history fully into the present. This area has the most comprehensive education centre in the country. Beyond the city limits, the Victorian inspired streets give way to beautiful countryside, characterised by rivers, farms and nature reserves.

This city is home to some of the country's top sporting events such as the Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Comrades Marathon and horse racing at the Greyville Race Course. Scottsville Race Course, a Spanish style course, has a number of restaurants, a pub, a picnic enclosure as well as the usual racing facilities. The Golden Horse Casino is conveniently attached to the Scottsville Grandstand. The Golden Horse offers a driving range as well.
Alexandra Park provides the perfect recreational area for outdoor exhibitions like Art in the Park and Cars in the Park, as well as various craft markets. The city has lots of great mountain biking (Karkloof, Cascades, Valley of 1000 Hills) and trail running. A visit to Sakabula Golf Club in the Midlands or in town, Victoria Country Club and Maritzburg Golf Club, all offer way more than 18 holes of great golf.
Pietermaritzburg is home to the Liberty Midlands Mall, which provides a great shopping experience for the whole family. For arts, crafts and tourism, the Midlands Meander is just a 20 minute drive from the city. Cinecentre at the Midlands Mall bring the very best and latest Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters to the Pietermaritzburg public. Dining is a passion in this area, with so many places to choose from there’s a restaurant to suit just about any taste.
Pietermaritzburg has a spread of people from all ages and backgrounds. Amber Valley is one of plenty retirement village just a few minutes away. The city is the birthplace of The University of KwaZulu–Natal, which offers a wide range of innovative academic programmes. This neighbourhood has some prestigious schools, like Maritzburg College (known for its talented rugby players) and Wykeham Collegiate.
