Michaelhouse - Explore, Educate, Excel

Founded in 1896, Michaelhouse is located on an idyllic, distinctive campus in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands and has built itself a formidable reputation as one of the premium schools for boys in the country.

With a distinguished heritage, Michaelhouse prides itself on its keen sense of community – an environment where the boys and their teachers are enthusiastic in their pursuit for success. Michaelhouse is an Anglican Diocesan College and, as such, operates within a strong Christian ethos, with the spiritual life of the boys forming a fundamental part of their education. With these principles in mind, boys participate in the rich academic, sporting, cultural, environmental and leadership life of the school. It is upon this grounding of values that Michaelhouse is proud to present well-rounded men into society as custodians of a long-standing tradition of excellence.

Education at Michaelhouse is geared to be progressive and meaningful, set to endow boys with the will and determination to do well across all spheres. The dynamism and diverse curriculum embraces the academic, spiritual, social and leadership potential in each boy and aids in producing young men with the confidence and ability to attain their goals. These various aspects are thoroughly covered through specific programmes and a plethora of opportunities made available to the boys during the course of their schooling at Michaelhouse. Over and above this, boys are offered meaningful life orientation lessons and guidance. Counselling is offered through the school counsellor and Home Room Teachers, who perform a variety of services within the school. The Matric results achieved each year are indicative of the school’s high standards; with a consistent one hundred per cent Matric pass rate, a large number of Degree-Entry Certificates, and many boys ranked in the top percentile in terms of their acquired marks.

Involvement in the cultural life of the school is seen as an important part of the boys’ intellectual development at Michaelhouse. The school makes provision for top education in Music, Drama and Visual Art through superlative facilities, and boys are given every opportunity to explore and express their talent via these programmes. All of these areas offer a rich exploration of the discipline, and multiple performances and exhibitions are the culmination of hard work and passion in these departments.

Sport is another key area in the school life at Michaelhouse. The school offers a variety of sports on well-maintained facilities that undergo frequent refurbishment to keep them at the highest standard. The gymnasium is equipped with weight training and aerobic equipment to assist in planned and personal fitness. Boys can also consult with a Sport Scientist and Biokineticist for the development of specialised programmes to allow for development that will give them the upper hand in their sporting pursuits. As a result of this comprehensive programme, Michaelhouse sees a number of its boys become regional, provincial and international representatives in sports.

Every boy who arrives at Michaelhouse is regarded as an individual. Throughout their senior school careers, they are encouraged to the best they can be by finding their passions in life and embracing the opportunities of a progressive education.
