TMJ's origins can be traced back to 1898 when the firm R Tomlinson Francis was established. The firm later entered into a partnership with Shepstone & Wylie in Durban, and traded under the name Shepstone & Wylie Tomlinsons. In 1987 the firm amalgamated with James Becker & Power, and in 1995 with Msimang Rutsch.
In April 2004 the partnership with Shepstone & Wylie was dissolved and the name reverted to Tomlinson Mnguni James.
