Bed and breakfast in Hanover
Our guest house is ideally situated on the N1 halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as halfway between Port Elizabeth and Upington making it the perfect stopover for weary travelers needing a comfortable room and tasty meal for the night. My wife and I have owned and run the guest house for 20 years which we bought as a going concern from the original owners who ran it for 14 years.
All our rooms are en-suite and are furnished in traditional Karoo / Victorian style with many antiques and original works of art on the walls. In the winter the dining room is well heated from an open fireplace where guests often linger after their evening meal as well as the cozy little pub. The total square meterage of the 4 houses is 2196sqm.
In the summer our little garden is a firm favorite as is the front stoep where visitors can enjoy a refreshing drink and watch the evening display of thousands of Lesser Kestrels gliding above as the sun sets. The total size of the erven is 5284sqm.
The Monument (576sqm) has 3 bedrooms all with en-suite showers, an entrance hall with beautiful stained glass doors and a large communal lounge. Across the street is The Cottage (240sqm) which also has 3 rooms all with en-suite showers and a small entrance hall.
The restaurant, can seat up to 22 people at one time and is furnished with many unique antiques in period style of years gone by. The cozy little pub is where travelers will more than likely have the opportunity to meet some of the locals who often come in for a drink after work and a bite to eat and to catch up with the local village news. This often lends itself to wonderful moments of hilarity and memorable moments. There is a fully equipped kitchen with our famous gas-fired pizza oven.
We have a mouth-watering pizza menu as well as a substantial al a Carte menu to satisfy everyone. Our pizzas have received acclaim from afar and are a must if you are a pizza fan.
Very conveniently, our home (340sqm) is across the road from the restaurant. It has 3 bedrooms with built-in cupboards and two lounges and two bathrooms. The four properties are adjacent to each other - two on each side of the street - keeping everything close by.
As a testament to our guest house and restaurant Liza Beekman wrote a song called 'Sonneblom uit Bethlehem' in which 3 Darling Street Guest House features prominently in the lyrics.
