472 ha Farm in Jansenville
Location
The farm is situated east of Jansenville near Waterford and north of Darlington Dam, approx. 180km from Port Elizabeth (incl. 35km of gravel).
Size
Made up of 1 title, the property is approximately 472ha in extent.
Description
This property encompasses a pleasing mix of varied topography, veld and habitat types. From the lower lying regions along the eastern boundary, it rises steadily to the west along three parallel ridges which are bisected by two prominent drainage lines with the southernmost drainage line being a seasonal stream. The elevated parts offer some truly outstanding views of the Darlington Dam and surrounding Addo Park. Here, perhaps more than any other Eastern Cape property I have visited, these dramatic and uninterrupted vistas give one this true sense of wilderness solitude and seemingly infinite space.
Veld types
The veld types vary considerably across the extent of the property with the elevation change which ranges from 395m to 690m above sea level. The area displays typical karoo veld where grazing is supplemented with karoo succulents and herbs. In the main, it is very healthy having enjoyed very conservative grazing pressure during the tenure of the current owner. There is a fair amount of quality grazing along the various drainage lines.
Browse is excellent with numerous valley bushveld species such as: jacket plum, wild olive, guarri, shepherds tree and sweet thorn complimenting the abundant spekboom that is found throughout the property. The value of the browse is born out in the sheer density of kudu found on this farm. A large number of aloe ferrox and cycads as well as tree euphorbias and cussonias add greatly to the general aesthetic appeal.
Rainfall
The farm falls in the summer rainfall belt and expects an annual rainfall figure of 275mm.
Game species
Game species that are on the property include an abundance of Kudu and Common Duiker.
Improvements
The property is a blank canvas with no homestead as yet but lots of superb building sites to pick and choose from plus there are heaps of old stone kraals that offer quality building stone should one wish to repurpose these.
Similarly there is currently no power on the farm and solar will be the best solution for off grid living.
Although the karoo is a relatively dry area, this farm has an adequate water reticulation setup with one solar equipped borehole that supplies water to two points for the game/livestock.
The farm is enclosed by a combination of 2.4m high game fencing (+- 4732m) and 1.2m high stock fencing (+- 6101m). There are a total of 4 internal camps.
The farm has an impressive internal road network allowing good access to the entire farm.
Conclusion
The current owners as with previous owners have put a tremendous amount of care and effort into maintaining the healthy state of the veld on this farm. Due to the multitude of valleys and hills the property gives the impression of being larger than its already considerable 472ha, and its genuine wilderness feel, while not unique is fast becoming a rarity in this part of SA. I have no doubt this farm would handsomely reward any owner who lavished the same amount of care as its current custodians.
