The dedicated and caring teachers at Greenwood Independent School primarily strive to help all learners reach their full potential in all areas. It is through the school’s carefully-designed, challenging curriculum that learners derive the comprehensive benefits of their school years – something that helps to build self esteem and confidence along with a lifelong love of learning.
The adjustment and happiness of every child at Greenwood Independent School is of the utmost importance to the learning community at the school. This provides learners with the security and emotional well-being to capitalise on the special academic, social and emotional education on offer at the school. The school and its hardworking educators are committed to providing learners with the required opportunities to be leaders capable of success. All of these important Greenwood lessons are conveyed in an environment that enforces the relevance of service to the community and the environment.
Academically, educators at the pre-school use the Montessori method. At this level, learning takes place through discovery both individually and socially. This phase prepares learners for the primary school, where there is one class of twenty learners per grade. The education on offer through the primary school is a combination of the Montessori method and mainstream systems to ensure a child-centred education within the requirements of the National Curriculum. These classes are complemented by a class outing per term, as well as a community project, which endows them with a meaningful and practical sense of social responsibility. In addition to this social education,
Greenwood is a member of the Eco-Schools programme, with the care of the environment forming a fundamental element of the school’s ethos. This programme creates the foundation for a number of initiatives within the school, and Greenwood is proud to have won awards for design and energy efficiency in an environmental context.
Greenwood Independent School has a number of activities on the go during the course of each term. These include clubs and societies, such as the Eco Club, Drama Club, Choir, Chess Club, Art and Music. These groups offer an important art and culture extension to the curriculum. The school also offers summer and winter sports under the guidance of a specialised sports coach. Greenwood participates in inter-school fixtures with great success through its membership with the Bitou 10 Foundation, with the school’s soccer team earning itself a formidable reputation on the field for its high standard of play.
