Home improvement on a budget

You don’t have to undertake major and expensive renovations to spruce up your living space. You can do so much without putting a dent in your bank account. There are many minor - and simple - tweaks that will make your home look brand new.

Start by critically examining each room and deciding which areas need attention. Your creative genius is sure to come up in the best possible ways as you revamp your house on a budget.

Here are some ideas:

Kitchen

Kitchen renovations are probably the most expensive to carry out. Fortunately, you can give your kitchen a fresh look by simply painting the cabinets. A bright coat of paint on faded cabinets can make a massive difference to the overall atmosphere of your home and won’t break your budget.

For an easy style change, replace old door knobs and drawer handles with more stylish models.

Also, consider upgrading your fridge, washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher, or any other worn-out appliance you may have had in your home for decades.

Flooring

Your choice of flooring can make a huge difference to the style of your living space. Replacing the floors can be costly, but a new carpet for the living room or entrance hall will add a pop of colour and give your home an instant lift.

Lighting

New lighting fixtures are inexpensive and can totally transform a room. Hang a chandelier in the entrance hall or a chrome pendant in the dining room to give your home a new touch.

Add a stylish standing lamp for a touch of class.

Colour

Painting interior walls is a quick way to transform your home, and it need not cost the earth.

To change the style of your home without any construction work, replace some of your outdated cushions, duvet covers and throws with more modern and colourful styles. If you are keen on craftwork, try knitting or crocheting your own giant chunky blankets.

Indoor plants can make any room look brighter, livelier, and more welcoming. Planters with colourful flowering plants are relatively inexpensive. Have a look through old stuff from your garage for items that can be turned into unusual planters.

Accent décor

One of the simplest ways to revamp your home is with stylish accent pieces. A new side table for the living room or a comfy armchair for the hallway will add character. Alternatively, look for new picture frames, plant pots or candles.

Outdoor space

If you have a garden or patio, remember to give this space as much attention as your interiors. Add a deck, landscape your plants and trees, or set up a cosy dining and lounge area.

Home improvement doesn’t always need to be a full-scale renovation or upgrade. You can improve the aesthetics and functionality of your property on a budget. All you need to do is focus on the right areas and change the things that will have the most impact.
