911 ha Farm in Riversdale

This 911ha farm is situated in the most beautiful, water-rich valley between the Waterval Mountain and the Langeberg Mountain. The farm is approximately 30 kilometers from Riversdale. Most of this is tarred road, with approximately 10km of gravel road. The gravel road leading to the farm ends in a cul-de-sac which means no public roads cross or pass through the farm.

One family has owned this property for a number of generations, and the farm is rich in agricultural history. Currently they have 9 hectares of Bon Chretien Pears, for which the owners have won numerous rewards. The farm has 34 ha of grazing under irrigation, 38 ha under dryland grazing, and the rest is natural fynbos berg veldt. An abundance of mountain water is available to irrigate all of the 81 hectares.

Water and soil are the lifeblood of the agricultural industry, and its success depends on a variety of soil types and the management thereof. The arable soils vary from well-drained sandy-loam to sandy-clay with decomposed shale soil (cool) on the higher lying areas.

The farm lends itself to planting of more fruit, nuts and stone fruit varieties such as: Apples, Kiwi, Macadamia, Fynbos (King Protea) and Cape Honey Bush Tea. Due to its remoteness, as well as the safety and peacefulness of the environment, additional income can be generated by venturing into hospitality, having visitors enjoy the many trails to explore hiking, mountain biking, running, or tackling a 4x4 route. Swimming could be allowed in one of the larger dams.

There is plenty of water on the farm. The origin of the Kruis River is on the farm and 6 earth dams are used for water storage. 650,000 cub metres are registered with the Department of Water Affairs and 125,000 cub metres are registered for storage. Rainfall is 900 mm per annum.
